Production: Skill Development
Cinematography
Cinematography PowerPoint by Katie Moon on Scribd
I created these to help my understanding of camera angles, shots and depth of field. I also wanted to understand each camera angle and know how to make the shots that we could need. I learnt how to use a range of camera skills and why we would use them and what we would use them for. The video shows the video type of shots that you can take and the PowerPoint shows more camera angles that you can use in photos and videos. I have also learnt many techniques that the film industry would use and how they would get the shots they need. This will help me achieve the shots that I will need and it will help me figure out what angle and equipment I will need to help convey a message to the audience. I have also learnt how to use the camera setting and have a better understanding of what camera setting I would need to use for what I am shooting. It has helped me understand quality control and figure out what I need to look for in the photos and videos I have taken.
Induction Project
Throughout the induction project, I have learnt how to use two of the camera settings to be able to take photos and videos for our project. At first, I didn't understand what each setting was on the dial but as I was working with the camera more, I figured out what each setting meant and how to use them. I also learnt how to use a variety of equipment like the tripod and the dolly. I learnt how to set up the tripod and how to attach the camera to the tripod. In the past, I have used tripods for my phone and other cameras that I have used but the tripod that the college provided was a bit different without setting it up. With the dolly, I had no experience with it and I had no idea how to set it up. However, I was trying to figure out how to set it up which was how I found the small buttons on the back. I pressed the buttons and figures that were how to get the legs of the dolly out. I then had to learn how to get the tripod onto the dolly. I could see where the tripod would go but I didn't know to attach it. With some help, I learnt how to attach the tripod to the dolly. As we were getting some footage for the induction project, we had a few problems with getting the lighting and the audio for a few of the shots. So when we went to reshoot them, we learnt how to get better audio and we had we change the area of one of the shots to improve the lighting.
As well as learning some of the technical stuff, I have also learnt a lot about the non-technical stuff. I have leant how to do research into a client and create a product on what that client wants in the product. I have also learnt how to interpret a brief and create a visual idea that will fit the client's needs and wants. I am also able to use research and the brief to make sure the product will fit the audience profile and put in what that audience group would want to see or how it will grab their attention. I have also learnt that filming isn't always an easy thing to do as you have obstacles like how busy the environment is and the weather for the outside shots. While filming for the induction project, it was difficult to get some of the footage as there were a lot of people that would get into the shots and the area would also very busy. There were also a few days where the weather was just rainy so we decided to just film our footage that was going to be inside.
Radio Advert
Foley Art
Audition
In Audition, I learnt how to create a an audio track for a Radio Advert about Healthy Eating. I learnt how to use diegetic sounds and non-diegetic sounds, I learnt how to make music fade out, learnt how to make the audio sound better than it was in the actual recording and I learnt how to put different audios together to create on big audio track. In the future, these skills will help me create better audio for future adverts whether it's a TV advert or a radio advert.
Western Shootout
When creating this project, I have learnt the importance of teamwork, communication and planning what we're filming. I have also gained the understanding of continuity. We had a lot of struggle with what we're going to film and where. This has taught me to be more organised so it can understand what we need to do and how we're going to film everything. In future projects, I am going make a list or storyboard of future ideas so I can stay organised and stay on track with everything that I need to do. In editing, I learnt how to work with different transitions, change the colour as well as learn how to include text into the video. Learning about Foley Art with in the radio project has helped me a lot with the Western Shootout project as I was able to add gun sounds as well as background music. For future projects, this will help me with editing and filming other projects as I would've already gained the knowledge needed and I will be gaining more skills in the future projects.
Podcast for Health and Social Students
Today, we helped the Health and Social students create their podcast, Fund-Mental Health. They talk about the different mental health problems for each episode and for this one, they were talking about schizophrenia and how it can affect people's lifestyles with this problem and how people can help anyone with schizophrenia. This has taught me how to use the software in the recording studio like recording, how the equipment can be set up and what equipment is needed for a podcast. When we did our podcast for the NHS Better Health project, we had no idea about the recording studio and if we had known about it, it would've probably made the process a lot easier as well as learning a lot more skills.
